Pigeon (Columba)
Getting rid of pigeons nesting on your property will
get rid of both a health risk and an unsightly mess. Pigeons tend to
nest along building ledges, on A/C units, on window sills, under bridges,
in parking structures and similar areas. They are gregarious, and are
usually found in small flocks numbering between twenty and thirty
birds. Unlike many birds, pigeons are not migratory, and can be
extremely stubborn about their nesting sites. They do not have a single
breeding season, and can have between four and five broods each year. A clutch of eggs takes about eighteen days to hatch,
and the fledglings will be mature enough to leave the nest after thirty-five days.
Historically, pigeons are descendants of the rock dove and were brought into the country by early immigrants. There
are over 300 different species of this bird.
Pigeons and doves (of the Columbidae family) are distributed everywhere
on Earth.

Overall, the Columbidae tend to have short bills and legs. They are also noted for their small heads on large
compact bodies. The wings are large and have low wing loadings. Pigeons have strong wing muscles
and are amongst the strongest fliers of all birds. They are also highly maneuverable in flight.
The family has adapted to most of the habitats available on the planet. Seeds and fruit form the major component of the diet of pigeons
and doves. In fact, the family can be divided into the seed eating and the fruit eating species.
Pigeons produce a large quantity of droppings, which can mar the
appearance of your home or business. In addition, their droppings
tend to be slippery, and can pose a fall hazard. Like most birds, pigeons' feces contains uric acid, which, due to its
corrosive nature, can cause etching in automobile paint and structural damage to residential and
commercial buildings; roofs are particularly vulnerable. Pigeon droppings contain bacterial, fungal, and parasitic agents
that can affect both humans and companion animals.
Permanent control of the pigeon population is extremely difficult due to the facts that they have adapted to stress
and there are many sources of food made available to them in the urban environment. The most effective
control available is the alteration of their environment.
